About The Team
Operations Planning, within the Operations division, provides coordination, planning and engineering support to enable safe and efficient access to the power system. The team prepares plans and advice for the real time control room teams on operational engineering to maintain system security.
About The Opportunity
We’re seeking a Senior Operations Planning Engineer to join us in either Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington or Christchurch.
As a senior engineer within a geographically dispersed team, you’ll provide technical and strategic leadership and advice to the Operations Planning Managers as well as develop, mentor and support our engineers, including graduates, as they build their soft skills and technical capability.
You’ll lead projects on behalf of the team and be heavily involved in process, technical and engineering improvements to ensure we can maintain a secure and reliable power system now – and into the future.
You’ll make a major contribution as you:
- identify and mitigate potential security impacts and ensure system security can be maintained
- ensure commissioning activity and updates of asset information and capability changes to the Operations tools are carried out in a safe manner and without compromising system security
- provide continuous improvements and support strategic initiatives

To be considered, your CV and covering letter will demonstrate:
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in electrical engineering or relevant experience e.g. electricity market, analytical or technical experience, works planning, scheduling
- Proven ability to independently develop technical solutions and lead technical work streams
- An ability to coach, mentor and build the capability of other engineers
- Experience in complex problem solving and solution analysis
- Well-developed verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to convey technical information to a non-technical audience
- Strong time management and attention to detail
- A tertiary degree in engineering
Desirable, but not essential:
- Knowledge of Power Systems, Protection systems, Electricity Industry Participation Code, High Voltage plant and equipment and generation plant.
- Experience and knowledge in a related specialist field or subject.
- Good level of electricity industry experience.
- Chartered membership of Engineering New Zealand (CPEng) or equivalent
