Job Description

The Senior Engineer – Autonomous Systems will work collaboratively on projects of high complexity developing and validating autonomous technology applied for use on Outdoor Power Equipment (OPE). This role will lead the identification and validation of external supplier’s technology and components for use on the equipment and will be the technical resource for the application of the technology. Working within a project team this position will provide input into the development of the electric vehicle system.

The Day to Day…

  • Identifies OPE electric control autonomous technology requirements and drives strategies with Supply Chain to identify suppliers and validate supplier’s technical capabilities.
  • Supports Product Directors and Platform Engineering to identify product and customer system level requirements.
  • Develop autonomous system technical direction, architecture definition and system level requirement documents and test plans for validation on equipment.
  • Analyze autonomous current technologies and strategies and evaluate for feasibility, reliability, safety, cost, and performance.
  • Coordinate component, system, and software level product testing through PVV test group with clearly written test requests. Align with Electrical Test group via DVP&R for internal and external testing.
  • Develop software requirement documents and test plans for verification and validation at the system and subsystem level using the V-model software development process.
  • Develop supplier relationships to align and advance controller specifications and manufacturing processes to supplier’s capabilities with focus on high quality, cost effective designs.
  • Review Industry patents related to autonomous vehicles in the OPE market and create IP to protect and advance company’s interests.
  • Actively participate and develop relationships with Industry Consortiums and Universities to monitor technology advancements for product application. Conduct research on the autonomous vehicle industry to stay on top of trends, protocols, and safety requirements.
  • Supplies technical information to other groups as required such as Design, Sourcing, Testing, Analysis, Manufacturing, Tech Pubs, and Industrial Design.
  • Gives periodic presentations of innovation projects to platform managers, marketing managers, executives, etc.
  • Documents and presents technical information and arguments as required during design reviews.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% (domestic and international)

The Requirements…

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from a four-year accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in embedded system design and controls applications.
  • Knowledge of current autonomous technologies and trends, sensors, and system trade-offs.
  • Experience developing real-time embedded control systems and control software development, CANbus architecture, and CANopen and J1939 protocols.
  • Ability to model and simulate autonomous system functionality using Matlab/Simulink.
  • Knowledge of Functional Safety (ISO 13849, ISO 26262) and application in equipment design.
  • Knowledge of battery technology and control systems application within the Outdoor Power Equipment or similar market.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to work on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate at all levels of the organization as a technical leader and individual contributor.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, Visio, MS Project and PowerPoint.
  • This position is located in Brillion, WI.
