We have an exciting opportunity for an innovative Retail and Catering Manager to lead the University’s retail and catering experience to a higher standard, servicing our diverse student communities and befitting a top 100 worldwide University.   

In this role you will lead, manage, and coach a team of five, tasked with creating a thriving and vibrant campus environment. This will be done by executing the retail strategy and bringing the plan to life through the development of retail and catering experiences across the University’s four main campuses.


  • Actively engage with our student community, retail owners, catering partners and other stakeholders while ensuring that your team, the retailers and caterers all meet statutory, regulatory and key operational requirements.
  • Seek data, market trends and consider strategic goals to assist planning, forecasting and analysis of financial information to make sound decisions which improve our overall student experience.

The Retail and Catering team sits within the Commercial Services group. It’s a busy and energetic team, highly motivated to create and provide great experiences on campus for students, staff and visitors to the University. Retail and Catering is a small, close-knit team, working together with the collective aim to increase the number of students shopping, dining and socialising on campus. The team needs to truly understand the needs of students and staff, then reflect this so that the ideal range of products and services is available via our retail partners.

Our ideal candidate will have a tertiary qualification in business, commerce related discipline or have relevant work experience in a similar role.

You will need to bring a sense of creativity and foresight in identifying opportunities to meet our strategic plan while leading a high performing team to drive business performance and results.

Nga Pūkenga Motuhake | Important Skills  

The role requires you to work closely and effectively with multiple stakeholders, from small business owners to lawyers, contractors, and other internal divisions.

  • Highly confident stakeholder management skills with demonstrably strong interpersonal skills
  • Proven experience in the planning, negotiation, and management of retail leases
  • Experience understanding and responding to the needs of customers
  • A track record of success in retail and commercial management
  • Proven financial acumen around budgets, forecasting and reporting
