Position Summary

The role is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation and management of Health and Safety programmes company-wide, while ensuring full regulatory compliance with all local statutory regulations including safety standards for all sites at all time. The incumbent is also responsible to create and grow a culture of safety awareness, plan and execute Health and Safety initiatives, and conduct orientation and training of personnel across all sites.

Key Activities and Responsibilities

* Develops a culture of safety awareness leading to significant reduction in accidents, incidents as well as maintain compliance with health and safety regulations

* Communicates health and safety policies and regulatory requirements

* Ensures coordination of and conducts EHS orientation, awareness and training of all personnel (employees, contractors, visitors) entering the JWN facilities

* Leads weekly and monthly Health & Safety reviews and participates in committee meetings

* Prepares, manages and ensures timely and accurate reports/documentation

* Manages the renewal of licences, certificates and registrations prior to their expiry date

* Oversees the management, implementation and coordination of the fire safety program

* Reviews incident notifications and disseminates same, in keeping with Global guidelines

* Ensures that all incidents are investigated to identify their causes and to determine how they may be prevented in the future. Implements corrective actions for Health & Safety

* Performs Safety audits at all sites, identifies opportunities for improvement and takes the appropriate actions, with the support of the Health & Safety Specialists

* Design and implement short and long-term operating procedures and action plans that will help to protect workers from potentially hazardous work conditions

* Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of the Safety programme

* Prepares the annual section operational plan and budget, including capital expenditure suggestions

* Ensures adherence of Health & Safety section to Procure-to-Pay requirements, and best practices associated therewith as a steward of the Company’s resources

* Establishes an accident statistics system and ensures that details are put into database

* Executes first validator duties as required, in ENABLON software

* Executes performance management of Health & Safety team members


· Bachelor of Science/Engineering/OSH degree with specialized training in Occupational Health and Safety management

* Ten (10) years’ work experience in Health and Safety Management in a manufacturing environment

* Strong leadership, interpersonal & communication capabilities, with the ability to work effectively with a range of constituencies in a diverse organization

* Ability to develop, implement & enforce Safety programmes and protocols through various interventions including training

* Trained ISO Auditor

* Working knowledge of Industrial Plant Operations

§ Proficiency in the use of computer software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint

§ Basic knowledge of Microsoft Visio and Projects software

§ Ability to operate motor vehicles and holder of a General Driver’s Licence for at least one year

Working Conditions

· Required to work 8 hours daily and on 24 hours call

* Required to travel to different locations

* Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as dirt, dust, unpleasant odours, and/or loud noise, as well as possible requirements to work at heights and in confined spaces

* The job may sometimes require long hours of standing or walking

* The incumbent plays a major role in auditing, coaching, documentation and enforcement of safety rules and requirements. He/she ensures compliance with governmental regulatory requirements concerning health & safety

* The incumbent may be required to work outside normal working hours and sometimes on weekends

* The job includes visiting areas in the production plant that may require the use of safety equipment (Personal Protective Equipment – PPE) to include but not limited to; safety glasses/goggles, gloves, safety boots/shoes

* The job holder must therefore be able to comfortably wear the Personal Protective Equipment necessary to safely carry out the job function
