Clinical Medicine Faculty

Ross University School of Medicine, located in Bridgetown, Barbados, invites applications for faculty in Clinical Medicine in the Department of Clinical Foundations. The academic center has facilities in the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Center, which is centrally located in the vibrant capital city of Bridgetown.

Education is the primary focus of the faculty. The academic year is divided into three semesters with a new class of students admitted each semester. Lectures and other educational responsibilities continue throughout the year. Research opportunities exist, primarily in the area of medical education.

It is important to note that we are looking for dynamic, adaptive, flexible colleagues who are interested in teaching in a variety of ways, that are open to utilizing and embracing technology, interacting with students in small group learning formats and creating materials for teaching, which may include videos, digital workbooks, etc

RUSM has a strong commitment to technology enhanced learning, utilizing learner centered classrooms with technology enhanced learning methods.

  • The successful candidate will have demonstrated familiarity with incorporating modern teaching tools and technology in their instruction
  • Familiarity with electronic platforms used in academic content delivery and educational apps such as Turning Point, Doceri, and /or other learning applications
  • Familiarity with mobile learning, use of ipads in teaching and creation of ibooks would be an asset
  • Experience or ability to adapt to delivering interactive instruction from a remote location

Responsibilities

Candidates are reviewed for a role based on the following two definitions:

1-Clinical Medicine Faculty: Assistant, Associate or Full Professor Rank

2-Clinical Medicine Faculty: Instructor Rank

The following outlines the details for each of these definitions:

1-Clinical Medicine Faculty: Assistant, Associate or Full Professor Rank

  • Prepare course material
  • Deliver effective interactive lectures and workshops
  • Facilitate small group learning in labs and simulation
  • Provide summative and formative assessment of student performance in various activities
  • Prepare, administer, and grade clinical examinations
  • Proctor written examinations as needed
  • Supervise and teach students under actual or simulated clinical situations
  • Participate in curriculum planning, development and delivery
  • Participate in the mentoring program and advise individuals or groups of students in academic matters and exercise professional judgment in referring students to appropriate personnel
  • Develop new instructional materials and teaching techniques with participation in on-going reviews and revision of curriculum planning
  • Actively participate in relevant professional activities in order to improve teaching and subject matter competence
  • Serve on faculty committees as appointed or elected, and confer with advisory groups in order to modify course content
  • Prepare and review examination questions to assess students’ knowledge and proficiency
  • Help cover the work of the department in a cooperative and collegial fashion

2-Clinical Medicine Faculty: Instructor Rank

Clinical Skills Instructors are junior faculty that will support the development and delivery of clinical teaching at RUSM. The post provides an excellent opportunity for trainees or other post-medical degree candidates to take a sabbatical from clinical training to develop their teaching and research skills. In addition, there will be time available to support candidates in preparing for professional examinations (where appropriate).

  • The successful candidates will be required to facilitate small group learning sessions designed to teach physical examination skills, medical interviewing skills, and case-based clinical reasoning
  • Assistance in high fidelity medical simulation used to teach students to apply clinical reasoning and a methodical approach to patients with time sensitive needs
  • Clinical Medicine Faculty hired at the rank of Instructor may also be assigned extended hour duties during pre-examination periods in order to coach students in skills practice sessions and are expected to proctor practical examinations within the clinical skills courses
  • Grading of patient encounter documentation is also expected as is performance of other duties, projects and tasks as requested by the department Chair
  • Participate in the mentoring program and advise individuals or groups of students in academic matters and exercise professional judgment in referring students to appropriate personnel
  • Opportunities exist to assist with curriculum development, medical education research projects and scholarly writing for publication
  • Clinical Skills Instructors report to the Clinical Foundations Chair and are directly supervised by the Vice Chair

Completes other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

1-Clinical Medicine Faculty: Assistant, Associate or Full Professor Rank

Education, Experience, Knowledge And Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Below are the attributes of the education, experience, knowledge, and skills required to competently perform in this position:

  • MD, MBBS, DO degree or equivalent medical qualification
  • Current licensure
  • Residency trained and Board Eligible/Board Certified
  • Current medical practice or significant medical practice experience within specialty
  • Recent academic appointment within an accredited U.S. or foreign medical school and/or experience teaching medical students or residents preferred
  • Experience with NBME / USMLE environments desirable
  • Documented record of teaching effectiveness desirable
  • Knowledge of adult learning methodologies
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Flexibility and ability to work well on a team
  • Desire for self-improvement
  • Educational technology skills, including use of e-learning management systems, audience response systems, online examinations, videoconferencing, desirable
  • Ability to demonstrate ongoing faculty development in medical education desirable
  • Ability to demonstrate use of active teaching methods preferred
  • Ability to initiate, complete, and present results of medical education research projects
  • Rank is determined based on education, credentials and experience based on the RUSM appointment policy.

2-Clinical Medicine Faculty: Instructor Rank

Education, Experience, Knowledge And Skills

  • The post holder must be a fully qualified medical practitioner (MD, MBBS or equivalent) holding a current medical registration and license to practice
  • Subspecialty residency training is not required for this position, but post graduate clinical experience would be an asset
  • Excellent communication skills in English
  • Desire for self-improvement
  • Flexibility and ability to work well on a team
  • Candidates will be selected based on their record of academic achievement and at least one phone interview with the Department Chair and Vice Chair
  • Successful candidates will not be able to promote to a higher rank unless they complete the requirements outlined for those rankings.
